Recommended Reading for Professionals

Emeryville Sports Physical Therapy recommends the following texts and articles for students and therapists.  The materials are partially listed from the recommended readings by Folsom Physical Therapy.

Texts:

1.      Freddy Kaltenborn, Manual Mobilization of the Joints.  Both the extremity and spine books.

2.      Muscle Stretches in Manual Therapy by Olaf Evjenth and Jern Hamberg.  This includes volume I and II.

3.      I.A. Kapandji: The Physiology of the Joints.  Volume One, Two and Three.

4.      Cyriax, James. 1978. Textbook of Orthopedic medicine.

5.      Maitland,GD 1987 vertebral manipulation and Extremity mobilization.

6.      Florence Kendall, Muscles: Testing and Function.

The following articles are useful to review:

·          Jull, G and Janda V., 1987. Muscles and Motor Control in Low Back Pain: Assessment and Management. In Physical Therapy of the Low Back.  Edited by Twomey, L. NY. Churchill Livingstone.

·          Morgan, Dennis. 1988. Concepts in Functional Training and Postural Stabilization for the Low Back Injured.  Topics in acute trauma rehab 2(4):8-17.

·          Waddell, Gordon. 1987 A new clinical model for the treatment of low back pain. Spine 12 (7):632-644

ESPT uses information and techniques from the Folsom Physical Therapy manual therapy training, various Maitland training programs, Gregg Johnson/Institute of Physical Art, Institute of Physical Therapy and McKenzie training programs.  Other manual therapy approaches are appreciated.  The clinic is eclectic, and physical therapists pursue various directions of professional study.

Theoretical discussions and philosophies are derived from a broad base.  The following authors are recommended for review: Grieve, G.; Gunn, C. on pain mechanisms; Cloward, R. on disk referral patterns; Bogduk, N. on somatic pain versus neurogenic pain patterns; Janda, V. on postural and phasic muscle patterns; Vollowitz and Morgan on functional loss characteristics and physical training methods; Waddell on the bio-psychosocial model of pain; Nordin ,M and Frankel, V. on the physiology of soft tissue, bone and nerve.
